On
the 24th of September we held The Reading Frenzy, a bring-and-buy
book sale for Chloe Eudaly, who runs the Reading Frenzy independent
book and zine store in Portland, Oregon in the US.
All
the books were just £1 each, but despite the tiny prices we
raised a massive £1575 ($2796) to help Chloe realise her dream
of a holiday in London as well as putting money towards the ongoing
health care of her adorable son, Henry. He is pictured, right, with
Chloe hiding somewhere in the picture too, and below.
Everyone
seemed to have a great time, especially our librarians (some in
glorious fancy dress) who so generously donated their time, cataloguing
skills and ability to get excited about the abandoned teenage diaries
and books with dirty pictures in.
Chloe
hopes to visit during April/May 2006 and during her visit she will
be hosting a ‘show and tell’ style event about her work
and Portland’s cultural output. Hopefully this should include
a Viewmaster format film and talks by writers who have lived in
Portland.
Many
thanks to the Horse Hospital for letting us use their space, everyone
who came and bought books, those who donated books, those who publicised
the event and most of all to our fantastic librarians.
